Project Hinterland

Het project waar ik al een tijd aan werkte, met als werktitel ‘Charlie’s Bistro’, is geëvolueerd en uitgegroeid tot het boek ‘hinterland’.

Hinterland is een fotografisch project dat zich richt op plekken buiten het centrum: randen van dorpen en steden, overgangszones en alledaagse omgevingen zonder duidelijke bestemming. Niet wat er gebeurt staat centraal, maar wat achterblijft. Het gewone verschuift wanneer functie en verhaal naar de achtergrond verdwijnen. Betekenis ontstaat in opeenvolging, in details, echo’s en verschuivingen.

Het is geen verhaal, maar een sequentie van beelden die op elkaar reageren. Hinterland benadert het ‘achterland’ niet als leegte, maar als een ruimte waarin iets zichtbaar kan worden — een open veld van betekenis, poreus voor interpretatie, zonder oordeel of conclusie.

The project I’ve been working on for some time, provisionally titled ‘Charlie’s Bistro’, has evolved and grown into the book ‘hinterland’.

Hinterland is a photographic project that focuses on places outside the centre: the outskirts of villages and towns, transitional zones and everyday environments without a clear destination. The focus is not on what happens, but on what remains. The ordinary shifts when function and narrative fade into the background. Meaning emerges in sequence, in details, echoes and shifts.

It is not a story, but a sequence of images that respond to one another. Hinterland approaches the ‘hinterland’ not as a void, but as a space in which something can become visible — an open field of meaning, porous to interpretation, without judgement or conclusion.
