The strangeness of ordinary places
Het project waar ik al een tijd aan werkte, met als werktitel ‘Charlie’s Bistro’, is geëvolueerd en uitgegroeid tot het boek ‘hinterland’.
Hinterland is een fotografisch project over alledaagse plekken aan de randen van dorpen en steden. Het gaat niet om wat er gebeurt, maar om wat er zichtbaar wordt wanneer niets bijzonders lijkt plaats te vinden.
De beelden tonen geen duidelijk verhaal en leggen niets uit. In plaats daarvan nodigen ze uit om te kijken: naar details, herhalingen en verschuivingen, naar momenten die eerst onopvallend lijken, maar gaandeweg iets kunnen oproepen.
Hinterland laat zien hoe het gewone iets vreemds en herkenbaars tegelijk kan zijn — zonder dat het wordt benoemd of verklaard, zonder oordeel of conclusie.
De foto’s zijn voornamelijk, maar niet uitsluitend, gemaakt in mijn thuisland, de Roerstreek.
Het boek is in eigen beheer uitgebracht, omvat 92 pagina’s en is voorzien van een hardcover. De oplage is gelimiteerd tot 50. Ieder exemplaar wordt met de hand genummerd en gesigneerd. Het boek is -vooralsnog- uitsluitend bij mij verkrijgbaar en kost € 29,95 excl. eventuele verzendkosten (brievenbuspakket).

Hinterland is a photographic project about everyday places on the outskirts of villages and cities. It’s not about what happens, but about what becomes visible when nothing out of the ordinary seems to be taking place.
The images do not tell a clear story or explain anything. Instead, they invite you to look: at details, repetitions, and shifts; at moments that seem unremarkable at first but may gradually evoke something.
Hinterland shows how the ordinary can be both strange and familiar at the same time—without being named or explained, without judgment or conclusion.
The book is self-published, comprises 92 pages, and features a hardcover. The print run is limited to 50 copies. Each copy is hand-numbered and signed. The book is—for the time being—available exclusively from me and costs €29.95, excluding any shipping costs (letterbox package).
